BACKGROUND
In Hannah's world, magic is part of every day life. However, like most skills, magic must be taught and refined in order to make the most of it. It is taught in schools as commonly as reading and arithmetic, and those who choose to pursue the craft can do so via further studying (the "college" path) or apprenticing (the "vocational" path). Many often make the decision after their compulsory 12 years of schooling but some, like Hannah, take gap years before fully committing.
The thing is, licensed Mage Masters are few and far between, so vying for apprenticeship can be pretty cut-throat. Some prep for years to be able to qualify and get assigned to the mage of their choice. And some, like Hannah, decide to be a complete imbecile andleave it to the last minute let the fates point her where they may...
Cut to two years training under Magister Alrick Alabastor (not his real name) and Hannah, two years into her quarter-life crisis, has not only learned goose egg about advanced magic, but she hasn't even been given the opportunity to choose a specialty yet. But boy does she know how to balance someone's checkbook, pick up dry cleaning, organize someone's calendar, and optimize Microsoft Excel. :) Kill her.
(Yes, she technically gets a stipend but she often just temps on the side if only so she canget a break retain some of her sanity.)

For non-magical modern AU purposes, everything is essentially the same except Alrick is just a regular old coot who has far too much money to know what to do with and Hannah is essentially a personal assistant/secretary that manages almost every aspect of his life.
